VeriSign Identity Protection iPhone App Review and Hack

VIP Access iPhone App

VIP Access iPhone App

I recently found out of the VeriSign Identity Protection (VIP)  App for the iPhone. This works the same way as the Key Fob what you can buy from VeriSign and Paypal. You can protect your PayPal and eBay accounts by using the VIP or Key Fob by using a security Code with your username and password when logging in to these services. I think this is a much better for me since I always carry my phone and sometimes forget the key fob when I need it.

The VIP app will only work on the iPhone since you need to receive an SMS message to activate the app unless of course you do a little ‘Hack’ to get it to work on the iPod Touch. To do this hack you will need a mobile phone to receive the SMS message to activate the app and some software like 7Zip or WinRAR to be able to edit a file in notepad

  1. Unplug your iPod Touch from your computer
  2. Download the ‘VIP Access’  App from the iTunes App Store
  3. Click ‘Applications’ on iTunes
  4. Right click the ‘VIP Access’ app and click ‘Show in Windows Explorer’
  5. Open the file called ‘VIP Access 1.0.0′ in 7Zip or WinRAR
  6. Open ‘iTunesMetadata.plist’ in Notepad
  7. Find the following:
    <key>softwareSupportedDeviceIds</key>
    <array>
    <integer>2</integer>
    <integer>4</integer>
    </array>

    and replace it with

    <key>softwareSupportedDeviceIds</key>
    <array>
    <integer>1</integer>
    </array>
  8. Save ‘iTunesMetadata.plist’
  9. Restart iTunes, Plugin your iPod Touch and Sync your iPod Touch.
  10. Load the ‘VIP Access’ app
  11. Enter your Mobile Number
  12. Close the App
  13. Once you have received the SMS on your phone load Sefari and type in the URL that is displayed in the SMS Message that you have just received. This should reload and activate the app and you will be good to go :) Be sure to type the  URL as it is wrote in the SMS Message otherwise it will NOT work.

This should work for all applications that are limited to the iPhone but you will only need to do Steps 1 to 9 =]

iPhone / iPod Touch Carrier Logo

iPhone / iPod Touch Carrier Logo Change

I recently found out how to change the ‘Carrier’ logo on the top left hand corner on the iPhone / iPod Touch. To do this you will need a jailbroken iPhone / iPod Touch.

Once you have jail broken the device you need to

  1. Open the ‘Cydia’ app
  2. Search for ‘Make it Mine’ app and install it.
  3. Load the app ‘MIM’
  4. Type your selected phrase in the box
  5. Tap ‘Carrier’ or ‘Banner’ to set.

Enjoy =]

Add a new mail, contacts, calendars account

Add a new mail, contacts, calendars account

iPhone 3.0 firmware came out yesterday and I noticed they now support CalDAV so we can Sync our calendars to the device. You can make events on the iPhone/iPod and it will add the event to the Google Calendar and vice versa.

I was trying to figgure out how to get Google Calendar working on the iPhone 3.0 firmware and it was a little bit of a struggle but I manage to find out how to do it.

  1. Go to Settings > Mail / Contacts / Calendars
  2. Touch ‘Add Account’ > Other
  3. Touch ‘Add CalDAV Account’
  4. Enter the following information:

Server: www.google.com
Username: Google Username
Password: Google Password
Description: [Calendar Name]

Once done touch ‘Next’ and your done :)

Hope that helps :)

TWiT Netcast’s iPhone Web Application

TWiT Netcast Player by Storm
TWiT Netcast Player

This weekend Houdini7 updated the new TWiT.am application for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The updated application now has a built in bookmark features so you can browse the TWiT, ODTV and other various related websites.

I found it rather hard to browse the ODTV site so I asked Kiwinerd to install the WP-Touch plugin for WordPress. This made the ODTV website look like an iPhone App.

I also had the idea to build a web application to browse and listen to the TWiT Netcasts. I know there are already applications for the iPhone that will do something like it but I wanted to make my own and hopefully Houdini7 will implement it into the next version of the TWiT.am application.

If you would like to check the app out goto http://iStorm.tv/twit/tai/ on your iPhone / iPod Touch. If you have any feedback please let me know via email storm@odtv.me

The latest craze in the TWiT Army are ID cards so I decided to…

The latest craze in the TWiT Army are ID cards so I decided to make one. People are using Big Huge Labs Badge Maker to create them. I edited mine using Adobe Fireworks CS3 to resize my photo and the Quick Response Code (QR-Code). A few people have asked me what is a QR-Code and how I made it. A QR-Code is a 2D bar code that was created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave. The code can be printed and and then you can use a Mobile Phone to scan the code and read the data. To generate the QR-Code I used a service called Kaywa. For more information on QR-Codes check out this Wikipedia article.
