My Music (S3) iPhone App

My Music App

My Music App

I recently backed up my music to a private Amazon S3 Bucket just in case my HDD failed or I lost my music some how and most of the sites where I buy my music from only let you download it once.

I found a really groovy PHP Script that would allow me to upload and show the files in the bucket. I had an idea yesterday that I could listen to my music on my iPhone from Amazon S3. So I began to get some of the S3 Apps from the app store.  The apps in the app store would not play music from the S3/ They would only let me upload pictures and change the permisions but that was about it, so I decided create a little Web App.

I had already had a php script that I found on net tuts+ that would list the files in the bucket and allow uploads via a basic form. I use this script when I’m out and about and don’t have access to my music on my computer.

I found a site iPhone Web App Template I came across on Mod My i that I edited to fit my needs. I removed the iphonenav.js since that was not needed and I then had to remove some of the pre made content and set the title Storm’s Music (S3).

I then inserted PHP Code that I downloaded from net tuts+ into the iPhone WebApp Template. I then had to remove the the upload part since that is not needed.

I was looking on the internet for some icons for the web app and I came across some nice ones at E-maniacs which where free to use. I edited the one I wanted, saved it as apple-touch-icon.png and uploaded it to the root directory of where the files would be all stored.

I then added this one line of html in the header tags on my page

<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="apple-touch-icon.png"/>

I now naviagted to my site (I wont give this out since it’s private and for me only) on my iPhone and then added a shortcut to my Home Screen.

Loading Screen of My App.

Loading Screen of My App.

I didnt like the Address Bar or the Safari Shortcut Bar to display when I loaded the site, since I don’t have access to a mac for a while I got my friend Houdini7 of Shift Key Software who kindly developed a little app for me with a nice loading screen. This solved the problem of the Address Bar and the Shortcut Bar from displaying.

Thats it done!

NOTE: This app is private and will NEVER be given or sent to anyone else. It will NEVER appear in the iTunes App Store as this would be agaisnt the law. Please DO NOT ask for it since I am the only person who will be using it. I just wrote this blog post as people may be intrested in creating their own.

Once you have jail broken the device you need to

  1. Open the ‘Cydia’ app
  2. Search for ‘Make it Mine’ app and install it.
  3. Load the app ‘MIM’
  4. Type your selected phrase in the box
  5. Tap ‘Carrier’ or ‘Banner’ to set.

Enjoy =]

Add a new mail, contacts, calendars account

iPhone 3.0 firmware came out yesterday and I noticed they now support CalDAV so we can Sync our calendars to the device. You can make events on the iPhone/iPod and it will add the event to the Google Calendar and vice versa.

I was trying to figgure out how to get Google Calendar working on the iPhone 3.0 firmware and it was a little bit of a struggle but I manage to find out how to do it.

  1. Go to Settings > Mail / Contacts / Calendars
  2. Touch ‘Add Account’ > Other
  3. Touch ‘Add CalDAV Account’
  4. Enter the following information:

Server: www.google.com
Username: Google Username
Password: Google Password
Description: [Calendar Name]

Once done touch ‘Next’ and your done :)

Hope that helps :)

TWiT Netcast’s iPhone Web Application

TWiT Netcast Player by Storm
TWiT Netcast Player

This weekend Houdini7 updated the new TWiT.am application for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The updated application now has a built in bookmark features so you can browse the TWiT, ODTV and other various related websites.

I found it rather hard to browse the ODTV site so I asked Kiwinerd to install the WP-Touch plugin for WordPress. This made the ODTV website look like an iPhone App.

I also had the idea to build a web application to browse and listen to the TWiT Netcasts. I know there are already applications for the iPhone that will do something like it but I wanted to make my own and hopefully Houdini7 will implement it into the next version of the TWiT.am application.

If you would like to check the app out goto http://iStorm.tv/twit/tai/ on your iPhone / iPod Touch. If you have any feedback please let me know via email storm@odtv.me

Download the TWiT.am app in iTunes

World Wide Developers Confrance

Today I joined Cali Lewis on her uStream.tv stream to watch Apple’s founder Steve Jobs’ present at the World Wide Developers Confrance 2008.

Steve Jobs’ announced Apple’s new web service Mobile Me The service runs on Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPod Touch. Mobile Me is the new version of .Mac and it allows you to upload all your files online and retrieve them on any device. So if I add a new event in iCal it will show up on my PC and iPod Touch within seconds. The service costs $99 per year and allows you to store up to 20GB worth of files. You can also get a 60 day trial.

Steve also announced the second version of the iPhone which will be coming July 11th. The iPhone allows you to download applications onto your phone they will also appear in the iTunes store. The iPhone also has a scientific calculator and a update maps with GPS, and last but not least a fast 3G connection what we’ve all be waiting for! Apparently some of the current owners of the old iPhone will be able to trade it in and get the new version for free of charge.

[UPDATE] You can now watch the WWDC Key Notes on Apple iTunes and on the Apple website.
